Social Action and Parliament

Social Action and Parliament begins in the Education Centre with an overview of social actions and how they connect to concepts such as roles, rights and responsibilities. The group will then visit spaces within the parliamentary buildings connected with social action, including select committee rooms, the Theatrette and the Debating Chamber.

Social Action and Parliament is designed to provide students with an understanding of how they can create social action at Parliament. The information is tailored to the age and needs of the group and provides opportunity for students to ask questions specific to their study. For some student levels it may be also important to link to how their social actions could influence policy change.

What level is this programme aimed at?

This programme is designed for any students learning about the various types of social action they can take connected to Parliament. Students working towards social studies achievement standards at NCEA Levels 1-3 will find this programme valuable. Resources are available to support development of social action projects related to Parliament. 

How long is the programme?

Social Actions and Parliament is a 60-minute programme (90 minutes when the House is sitting).

Meeting your member of Parliament

Electorate members of Parliament may be available to meet with students during your visit. Let the Education team know if you would like to request a meeting with your electorate MP (subject to availability).

If you wish to meet with MPs other than your electorate MP, you will need to make these arrangements independently outside of your time booked with Education Services. You can do this by contacting the MP’s office directly.

The maximum group size is 35 visitors, including adults. Standard adult to student ratios apply.
